About This Competition
The Olympics have begun! So we thought it only appropriate to feature a Japanese malt one one of our competitions. We are going off the beaten Suntory path this time, to Japan’s highest distillery and probably one you have never heard of!
Off we go to the alpine region of Japan now known as Nagano, where the Mars Shinshu distillery can be found. Shinanotanpopo means ‘Dandelion of Shinano’, The Komagatake Shinanotanpopo bottling is the third in the “Nature of Shinshu” series from Mars, which honours a different part of the flora surrounding the distillery with each release, as well as offering up interesting maturation and cask blending methods in the production.
Released in 2017, with a total outturn of 11000 bottles, this whisky is a vatting of ex-bourbon, white oak and sherry casks – some of which are rumoured to be over 20 years old. Mars’ profile has been on a steady rise recently thanks to their their annual Komagatake releases as well as aged spirit from their new site at Tsunuki. Even Mr Serge was impressed. We have no doubt that the price of these bottles will follow the trajectory of their more established Japanese cousins.
