Legend has it that the Devil turned up at the Round Church in Bowmore but – with no corners to hide in – the locals were able to chase him down the hill and into the distillery where he slipped inside a cask to hide before it was shipped to the mainland. Its the day before Halloween & there can be no better occasion to unleash the Devils Cask.
Back in 2013, when I knew nothing about whisky, Bowmore released the original Devils Cask – a 10-year-old, cask-strength, first-fill sherry with deep red tinge. This was followed by a second batch in 2014, and then a third in 2015. Now, 11 years later , Bowmore has resurrected the series with a new 10-year-old Devil’s cask. A small batch release matured in first-fill oloroso sherry casks with a Pedro Ximénez cask finish and presented at 56.6% abv, without artificial colour or chill filtration.
Ive drank a LOT of Bowmore, in fact on certain nights you might even find me confessing its my favorite Islay distillery BUT I wouldnt go anywhere near most of their official releases as they are diluted to death. Bowmore below 50% abv is a total travesty imo & for reasons unknown just seems to fall apart. So its encouraging to see the distillery release something with oomph. Ive got high hopes for this and a bottle waiting to be opened. Im really hoping this is the perfect autumnal dram.
