About This Competition

This competition is inspired by my most recent blind tasting. One of the samples was a Balvenie 12 from the 1980’s. The Balvenie 12 is a staple dram which I’m sure everyone on the tasting would have had tried at some point during the early stages of their whisky journey. However this particular 12 from the flashback years was something else! Complex beyond its age, it genuinely rocked our socks.

So we decided to do something a bit different. In keeping with the World Whisky Day theme and a focus on ‘Taste’, we thought it would be a great opportunity to take an iconic standard core release, but source an older bottling! The winner can conduct their own taste comparison to see how an everyday dram has evolved over the decades.

We have managed to get our hands on a 1 litre Balvenie 12 Doublewood which I believe was distilled in 1993. Its not quite the 80s we were aiming for, but this should still be sufficiently ‘old school’ for many. It shall be accompanied with a current Balvenie 12 miniature so the winner can get stuck in right away.

For those unfamiliar with Balvenie, this Speyside distillery is one of only a handful to continue with the tradition of floor malting. Combined with the use of their own local barley and their on-site cooperage, it is no surprise that their whisky is universally appreciated. You simply cannot not like a Balvenie, period. Under the helm of David Stewart -the longest serving Malt Master at any distillery in history –  the Balvenie has been at the forefront of innovation. The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old was the first whisky produced as a result of two cask maturation. This was unheard of in the 80’s but is now an established technique commonly referred to as ‘finishing’.

Note: Due to the age, there are some small dents to the outer tube and some rusting of the lid. The bottle itself is in pristine condition.
