The UK market is currently awash with Weller bourbon; not a bad thing given its relative scarcity over the past few years. There’s the Weller Full Proof, the Antique 107, the 12 year old, Special reserve & of course the grand daddy William Larue Weller. The one you might not have come across is the Weller CYPB – short for Craft Your Perfect Bourbon.
The CYPB concept originated in 2018 from an online crowdsourcing campaign launched by Buffalo Trace, where over 100,000 whiskey fans voted on their ideal mash bill, aging location, maturation time, and proof. The overwhelming consensus resulted in this exact configuration: a wheated bourbon recipe, aged for 8 years on the highest floors of the rickhouse, and bottled at 95 proof (47.5% ABV). Aging on the top floors of the warehouse is where extreme temperature fluctuations push the liquid deeper into the wood.
From a flavor profile perspective what makes C.Y.P.B. stand out is its balance. It comes across as more carefully constructed than the rest of the Weller lineup. From the collectors perspective, the CYPB is only released once a year; but not necessarily every year; so it tends to get snapped up pretty quick.
