About This Competition
The first SMWS Winter Series bottling of the year, Spirit of Hallowe’en, offers playful mischief and bold autumnal flavours from this member-favourite Islay distillery. Yes, it is a Laphroaig (SMWS distillery code 29), and it is also the 300th cask that’s been bottled by the society.Â
After spending eight years in an ex-bourbon hogshead, this was transferred to a second fill American oak Pedro Ximénez hogshead for a further 3 years.
The nose delivers a hearty warm-up of pastrami, mustard and lightly smoked paprika, with a hint of barbecued cod and wild thyme. Theres a mentholic freshness, reminiscent of a sports massage, alongside smoked cheese and fennel sausage, the scents working up like a pre-game ritual. The palate unfolds with menthol and eucalyptus lozenges and rosemary honey oozing over chalk dust and ash.
