During my first trip to springbank, I walked away with a personal truth that I rarely see written about. You see, everyone fights over the old juice. And rightfully so. But as I tasted my way around the warehouses, and participated in steps of production, I fell in love with the spirit itself. The newmake and the young spirit is something to behold. If you try a 5 year old springbank blind, you would think it was an old world islay. Big vibrant peat. Like Ardbeg before it became a circus. They rarely if every bottle the wee beasties, but as you’ll see, they rock.
Which began a long and methodical collection of cage bottles. You see, the cage is something unique. Warehouse samples, sometimes epic, sometimes strange, always fucking interesting. Young spirits, unusual casks types, projects in progress. For the true geek, they are an invitation to dance. Rohan convinced me to open a number of different cage bottles I’ve picked up over the years to share and enjoy. A mix of Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn, some light as butterscotch other dark as cola.
In addition, I’ve added three special surprise bottles – an inaugural bottle, a peated beast from my favorite islay marquee & a curious shop exclusive.
We will be sampling the 7 cage samples on the night (& potentially the other 3 drams if we are still standing)
